Abstract

The most northerly known outcrop of Carboniferous rocks in Britain is at Inninmore Bay, Morvern, Scotland. Assemblages of fossil spores indicate a mid-Westphalian B age for coal lenticles and underclay low in the exposed succession, and an age at about the Westphalian B-C boundary is suggested for the Main Coal higher in the succession. Previous consideration of poorly preserved plant remains had led to the attribution of the measures to horizons not higher than the Ell Coal (mid-Westphalian B).
